Zero Failure Rate Electronics Design Opportunities
Context
Electronics systems with a zero failure rate would allow electronics to be used for safety-critical functions on vehicles such as steering and braking. They would also simplify the design of vehicles and hence reduce cost in that access to electronic modules for adjustment or replacement would no longer be necessary
Aims
To provide a holistic view of the impact that zero failure rate electronics will have on future vehicles.
To analyse the benefits and make recommendations of where the development of zero failure rate electronics will create the most significant opportunities for vehicle designers.
Method
Review of the technology for creating zero failure rate electronics systems and components to identify the extent of their current and future capabilities
Study the options created by the use of zero-failure electronics in a particular production vehicle.
Develop new design concepts for the body-in-white.
Evaluate these concepts and calculate the effect on manufacturing complexity, weight and cost.
Identify the most significant opportunities for the application of zero failure electronics in road vehicles.
Benefits
Identification of the cost effectiveness of developing and applying zero failure electronics.
