Structurally Advanced Lightweight Vehicle Objective-Filling the Manufacturing Gap

Context

The next generation of vehicles will be radically different from their predecessors. The most important change will be towards lighter, more energy efficient, environmentally friendly vehicles. This will inevitably lead to a complete change in the way these vehicles are built and in the materials used.

Aims

The project aims to draw together and develop the necessary manufacturing technologies and processes to meet the challenge of producing these radically different vehicles. It also aims to explore the new opportunities created by change which will enhance manufacturing flexibility, adaptability and process quality. SALVO 6 is one of a portfolio of 6 linked collaborative projects (two of which are supported from public funds) that will demonstrate options for light weight vehicle manufacture in approximately 2010.

Method

The project comprises six work packages:-

Tooling design for spaceframe structures.
Adhesive application and injection techniques.
Manufacturing cell for validation of SALVO 6 technology.
Design of production facilities for alternative vehicle manufacturing facilities.
Control systems for integrated vehicle manufacturing facilities.
Fastening systems for spaceframe body structures

Benefits

Product lead time reduction through late vehicle configuration.
Reduced investment for vehicle manufacture.
Greater responsiveness in the supply chain.
Reduced environmental impact from manufacture.
Improved quality and performance from advanced joining techniques.
Manufacturing system adaptability for increased customer choice and product change.
