Whole Vehicle Whole Lifecycle Electrical Design

Context

There is an increasing amount of electrical and electronic systems in modern road vehicles. At present it accounts for about 10% of total vehicle cost and includes some of the most complex aspects of the vehicle design. Further complications are added by variants in vehicle configuration, where installed options can make the possible interactions between vehicle systems depend on the configuration chosen by the customer. It is a major challenge to assess the safety and reliability of such systems as early as possible in the design process. Current design analysis tools work only at the sub-system level. The project will extend the power of these tools, providing the ability to perform design analyses across the whole vehicle.

Aims

To develop a means to create a model of a whole vehicle electrical system, integrating several kinds of simulation to that a mixed granularity simulation can be carried out throughout the design lifecycle. The simulation will allow an automated analysis of the design using the most accurate information available at that point in the design cycle.

Method

The project will carry out

- Identification of industrial case studies
- Investigation of the best ways of extending simulation tools to overcome limitations
- Evaluation of produced software
- Iteration of the process as further limitations are identified
- Extraction of general principles for large-scale mixed granularity simulation

Benefits

The industrial benefits will be
- To improve the design of complex and dependable vehicle electrical systems
- To reduce the time to market by faster design analysis
- To reduce the development cost by improving design feedback
- To reduce the final cost of the whole vehicle by reduction of maintenance costs
- To stimulate changes to the design process through improved automated tools
