Automatic Generation of Design Improvements by Applying Knowledge Based Engineering to the Post-Processing of FE Analysis.

Context

The design of an automotive component typically involves several cycles through the design and FE analysis stages. These are often entirely separate processes resulting in a long product development time.
This could be improved if the results of the analysis could be interpreted automatically and used to suggest or implement design modifications.
This would speed the product introduction process whilst allowing more variants to be considered during the design process.

Aims

To develop methods to allow automatic feedback of the results of a finite element analysis to a KBE environment so that design changes can be created using rule sets for that type of component.
To incorporate the changes automatically into the model and re-run the FE analysis
To demonstrate that this work can be carried out using a PC rather than a workstation.

Method

To study and analyse the requirements of the automotive design process used by the collaborators, and relevant trends in KBE internationally.
To create a KBE environment in which engineers can capture their experience and current practices in the modification of a component following an FE analysis.

Benefits

Design engineers will be able to investigate more design options and follow each through to an optimum end point, whilst reducing the overall design time for an automotive component.
