Knowledge Management for Project-Based Learning: A Scoping Study

Context

One of the major competitive advantages offered by knowledge management is the ability to capture the knowledge and experience acquired during project work and re-apply it to subsequent projects or projects in other areas.
However project based learning poses exceptional challenges for knowledge communication as a result of the discontinuities in personnel, behaviour and information capture associated with projects.

Aims

Identify likely enablers and barriers to the effective capture and transfer of knowledge for project based learning
Develop a propositional framework and survey instrument for further exploration and analysis of knowledge management across projects
Provide a forum for sharing and exchanging ideas across sectors relating to knowledge management practice for project-based learning.

Method

This scoping study will investigate the relationships between key characteristics of project learning across sectors, including timescale and degree of interdisciplinary, and will develop a propositional framework relating such practices to knowledge management practices and outcomes.
Six project probes will be conducted, each involving a small sample of interviews and the application of a survey questionnaire to those involved in each project.
The analysis of the resulting data will help to identify enablers and barriers to the effective capture and transfer of knowledge and will provide insights into the effectiveness of different approaches across sectors.
The six organisations will be chosen from a wide range of sectors.
Workshop events will relate the research to business drivers and enable knowledge exchange.

Benefits

The costs of "re-inventing the wheel" in project work are enormous. As a first step in developing a more systematic analysis of the potential benefits of knowledge management, this study promises important improvements.
Participating organisations will benefit from cross-sectoral insights into best practice in Knowledge Management for project-based learning.
For the longer term the project will develop a methodology and framework for a full-scale investigation capable of determining important practical and conceptual improvements in this area.
