Accelerated Process Improvement
|
Context
Studies have shown a two to one productivity gap and a hundred to one gap in quality between the best Japanese and Western vehicle assemblers and parts manufacturers.
As a result, the SMMT Industry Forum established the two year Process Improvement Masterclass to train a group of UK engineers through hands-on experience in second and third tier suppliers guided by experts from Toyota, Honda, Nissan, General Motors and Volkswagen.
Aims
To observe, document and evaluate the lessons of the ensure the outputs of the Master Classes are recorded and disseminated.
Method
The project will observe the Masterclasses in action and through a series of interviews with the experts, the trainees and the host companies will draw out the common experiences, the best practices and the challenges that were encountered
Benefits
The motor industry will benefit from the distillation of the lessons and best practice in accelerated process improvement, and the training of staff to lead such activities.
Industry in general and Government will learn the extent to which the Process Improvement Masterclass is a model for accelerating change across a whole sector.
