Development and Demonstration of a Vehicle Performance and Emission Monitoring System
|
Context
The current array of technological, institutional and planning tools to deal with the environmental impact of transport are inadequate.
New technology is needed that will combine data on both travel and traffic behaviour with environmental data
Aims
To specify the requirements for an in-vehicle performance monitor, emissions sensor and data transmission system using state-of-the-art technology
To define a functional architecture for the device
To define algorithms and hardware to realise the functional architecture
To develop and test a device to demonstrate the technology
To develop a comprehensive data base structure and the transport and environmental modelling tools
To conduct limited field trials and use the data to demonstrate the use of VPEMS in transport and environmental modelling and in the study of the level of health risk associated with exposure to vehicle emissions
To develop ways of integrating VPEMS data with corresponding data from static sensors
To develop a business case and exploitation strategy for the VPEMS
Method
Demonstrate the concept of the VPEMS device in fully functioning hardware and software
Collect field data from the device and associated sensors in the infrastructure
Show how data mining techniques may be applied to the combined data set to provide scientific underpinnings for potential policy intervention
Derive a business case for exploitation of the device
Benefits
VPEMS will provide a capability for real-time sensing of spatially and temporally referenced vehicle and driver data. This will allow monitoring of vehicle environmental compliance, management of vehicle maintenance, environmental auditing, the creation of real-time pollution maps, promotion of the development of in-cabin pollution measurement, real time route guidance and fleet management.
