Root Cause Powertrain Refinement for Sustainable High Power to Low Weight Constructions
Context
A particularly problematic class of powertrain NVH is related to impact loading of sub-systems downstream of the engine. This is caused by power torque surge or fade during engagement or disengagement processes during operation of the clutch or throttle
Aims
Identify the root cause of high frequency impact induced drivetrain vibration
Method
Generate a fundamental understanding of the sources and mechanisms of impact loading transmission to light weight structural components of the driveline system
Carry out a fundamental investigation of mechanisms and paths for structural acoustic coupling
Identify root-cause remedial actions to reduce (and ideally eliminate) the problem
Draw recommendations for manufacturing and "sign-off" tests for sub system and component selection
Develop state-of-the-art CAE tools for virtual prototype testing and parametric studies of powertrain high frequency transient phenomena
Benefits
Improved customer perception of a vehicle through the reduction of structure-borne noise
Reduced warranty claims
Advanced CAE systems for the study of highly non-linear powertrain vibrations
