SHORSEN This project is in progress
Short Range Sensors for Automotive Applications

Context

Novel sensors are needed for the technically demanding applications of collision warning and avoidance, pedestrian sensing, low-speed additions to Adaptive Cruise Control and enhanced parking aids

Aims

To assess the feasibility of delivering the high data rate angular and range information from compact microwave radar systems
To investigate the potential for such a system to detect and predict the size of vulnerable road users
To investigate alternative techniques for enhancing the detection of vulnerable road users such as video and infra-red sensors
To install hardware on a demonstration vehicle to evaluate sensor performance in simulated situations

Method

Analyse the different information requirements for the chosen applications
Obtain data from typical situations to understand how closely current state-of-the-art systems can meet the requirements
Investigate the performance of current wide-angle microwave sensors
Investigate the potential of other technologies for detecting vulnerable road users
Prepare recommendations on the development of technology for these applications

Benefits

The development of products that will increase road safety
