PROBE-IT This project is in progress
Probe Vehicle Information for Traffic Management and Road Network Operations

Context

It has been estimated that if all vehicles were driven within the speed limit and drivers observed all other traffic regulations, accidents would be reduced by between 25 and 50%.
In research carried out by the AA, other than in town centres and on motorways, 50% of drivers are not aware of the local speed limit

Aims

To investigate the feasibility of dynamically updating map databases to increase their accuracy and detail using forward facing sensors on probe vehicles
To add to the database information about current traffic conditions, local conditions and traffic regulations
To devise methods of indicating the most efficient speed to reduce emissions

Method

Develop and evaluate data management for a range of telematic applications that utilise position related information
Deliver -
 database interface software
 results from a vehicle equipped with advanced sensing and mapping systems
 communications software and an in-vehicle user interface
 a report describing potential applications and business case issues
 a timing plan for potential applications
 reports on simulation results, driver behaviour and demonstrator vehicle evaluation results

Benefits

Increased road safety thorough enhanced awareness by drivers of local traffic regulations and conditions
