Wireless communication to road users for Urban Traffic Management
Context
Urban traffic congestion results in delays to travellers and increases in urban pollution. It also disrupts the provision of efficient public transport services resulting in more travellers opting to use their own vehicle.
The provision of in-vehicle information would enable drivers to take action to avoid congested area and would improve the service to those using public transport.
Aims
To assess the value of communications at 5.8 GHz for urban traffic management
Method
Develop a specification for the roadside-to-vehicle link for UTMC
Build demonstration equipment and install in a PSV for live road trials
Produce guidelines for operation of the system to assist UTMC operators.
